The Names in At Cana

The term “bar” is used to mean “the son of.”

Names in bold refer to persons who appear in the story.  Names not in bold are people who are referred to in the story but do not appear.  For example, James is mentioned several times, although he does not appear in the story.

Abe –  a waiter at the wedding.

Aliza – Mother of the groom (Yoel).  Wife of Niv.

Andy (Andrew bar Benjamin) – The headwaiter – the steward

Ari – A Greek trader.  Sells to caterers.

Ben (Benjamin) – the Samaritan guard at the Roman villa

Damon – the young Greek man who, with his brothers and mother, attend the wedding

Ephraim – the father of the bride (Orli). Husband of Zoe.

Ethan – a merchant

Hector – the Greek uncle of Nisha

Ira – Nazareth’s tax collector.  An honest man.

Jacobus – a Roman Jew who teaches Aramaic.

James – the step brother of Yeshua

John the cousin of Yeshua – the baptizer from the River Jordan. Son of Maryam’s cousin Elizabeth.

John the follower of Yeshua – the youngest of Yeshua’s followers

Judy (Judith) –  A skilled waitress at the wedding.  Mother of Rina.

Kleitos – a Greek boyhood friend of Yeshua.

Lucius – Roman nobleman whose villa is located near the banquet hall.

Maryam – Yeshua’s mother

Matthew – a follower of Yeshua

Mel (Melchoir bar Mordecai) – Andy’s gruff catering lieutenant

Nathanael – One of Yeshua’s followers. A native of Cana.

Nisha –  A catering waitress at the wedding. She is a personal friend of Maryam; she knows Yeshua as well.

Niv – Yoel’s father. Husband of Aliza.

Orli – The bride. Daughter of Zoe and Ephraim.

Philip the acquaintance of Damon – A youthful Greek trader

Philip a follower of Yeshua – this follower was known for his shrewd business sense

Rachel – Andy’s sister. The headwaitress at the wedding.

Reuben – a young man on Andy’s catering crew.

Rina – Judy’s daughter by a deceased husband

Simon – A neighbor of Niv.

Trina – the Greek mother of Damon, Demos, Euri and Peri of Sidon.

Viviana – Lucius’ mother.  A local Roman noblewoman.

Yeshua (bar Yusef) – Son of Maryam.  A carpenter and a rabbi.

Yoel – the groom. Son of Aliza and Niv

Yuri – a Greek boy on the catering team

Yusef – the earthly father of Yeshua. Maryam’s deceased husband. A master carpenter, or tektōn.

Zek (Zechariah bar Ezra) – the chamberlain, the “ruler” or “man in charge” of the wedding feast.  Andy’s boss.

Zoe – The Greek mother of the bride (Orli)  Zoe married Ephraim after her first husband, Ephraim’s older brother, died.
